REVISITING WONDROUS BEAUTY

While I've occasionally performed at small venues, I've primarily taken a break from live shows, a hiatus that's proven both rejuvenating and enriching. This period has allowed me to rediscover some of my earlier compositions, many of which had faded into the recesses of my memory. One of the downsides of crafting hundreds of songs over the span of several decades, I suppose.

One rainy afternoon a few days ago, in Burnaby, B.C., I found myself revisiting a particular tune - the title track from my 2017 album, "Wondrous Beauty." I hope you enjoy it, and may your day be filled with wonder and beauty as well.

FINDING HARMONY IN ADVERSITY: A MUSICAL JOURNEY OF RECOVERY AND CREATIVITY

Greetings, music enthusiasts! It's been an eventful summer, culminating in a unique twist of fate. Just as I wrapped up my Ontario tour, a curveball came my way in the form of a Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) injury, sidelining me for what seems like an eternity. However, as luck would have it, I find myself convalescing in the sunny embrace of Florida, turning an unexpected hiatus into a period of reflection and creative exploration.

Amidst the challenges of recovery, I've discovered a silver lining that has allowed me to delve into creative projects I've long yearned to pursue. One such endeavor involves harnessing the power of new Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to breathe new life into the production of video for my recorded material. These tools have opened up a realm of possibilities, and I've been diligently working on a series of videos for some of my compositions.

Today, I'm excited to share with you one of these creations – a video for my instrumental tune, "Dance of the Winter Fairies", which was recently re-released on Anthology, Volume 2. The enchanting melodies and visual elements come together in a symphony, capturing the essence of this magical piece. I hope it brings a touch of warmth to those in the northern climes, a reminder that even in the coldest of winters, music has the power to kindle the spirit.

As the year winds down, my focus on these creative projects becomes a beacon of positivity. It's a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the ability to find inspiration even in challenging times. While I eagerly anticipate my return to live performances in the new year, I invite you to join me on this digital journey.

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement. Your positive energy fuels my recovery and propels me forward. Here's to the healing power of music and the promise of a new chapter in the coming year. Until then, stay tuned for more musical adventures and, hopefully, a swift return to the stage. Wishing you warmth and creativity wherever you are.

Yours in melody, Ken

SO GREAT TO BE BACK TOURING IN ONTARIO

As much as I love wandering across this continent playing music, it is always a special treat coming home to my home province of Ontario. As June begins to wind down, I would like to express my gratitude for the continuing support of fans, venues, and media, as I close in on the half way mark of this wonderful summer tour. Please check my upcoming shows as the tour continues until October. Hope to see you soon. And don’t forget, I would love to perform a house concert in your home town. As a special treat, Anna may continue to join me on several future dates 🎶💕 Stay tuned!

THE SUNSET BEACH SESSIONS - DON'T BELIEVE

I recorded a series of videos at home on Georgian Bay's Sunset Beach during the summer of 2022. This first one features "Don't Believe", a song about maintaining faith, love, and hope in the face of negativity. I debuted this song at the Festival of Friends in Hamilton, Ontario almost 30 years ago and still find it a source of strength and encouragement! #folkmusic #georgianbay #kendunnmusic #trespassmusic

NEW OFFICIAL VIDEO: ONE LAST QUESTION

Well, Anthology, Volume 1 has "dropped", as we like to say in the biz! Many thanks to my Trespass Music team of Michelle Fortier and Larry Ahearn, as well as Nick Austin at Indie Pool for getting the job done at lightening speed.

At last count, there were 37 individuals involved in the production of this album - amazing musicians, engineers, and producers whose hard work and talent laid down the foundation for me to stand on.

And thank YOU, my small but dedicated band of die-hard supporters for hanging in there through thick and thin, through the lockouts and lockdowns, quarantines, and quarells that have befallen us all these past few years.

Well, perhaps a bit amateurish, but here is my first attempt at a lip sync video. I’m slowly learning the intricacies of video editing software, green screens, and so forth. The song itself is a call to end violence in its myriad forms. Caution: Some viewers may find scenes disturbing. Viewer discretion advised.

RETURN TO THE BIG TOMATO!

I love The Big Tomato, that is - Leamington, Ontario. As a teen, growing up in the nearby city of Windsor, I got a job picking those ruby red fruits destined to become Heinz ketchup ...but, alas, I digress.

Fast forward, and this old folksinger is returning to perform at the grand opening of the newly renovated Bank Theatre for the 98th iteration of Dale's Friday Coffee House.

Listen to the birds/ listen to the trees /Listen to music/ that brings you to your knees

Listen to the wind/ listen to the sea/ Listen to your heart/ and wear it on your sleeve

CHORUS: Just don’t believe x4

Hear the dogs of war/ knocking at your door/ They don’t even know/ what they are fighting for

They will try to tell you/ God is on their side/ But they cannot tell you/ why you have to die

CHORUS: Don’t believe x4

They will try to tell you/ peace is just a joke/ Then they stand around/ while the world goes up in smoke

They pollute the earth/ and pollute the air/ Then they have the nerve/ to say they really care

CHORUS: Don’t believe x4

Money doesn’t talk/ it screams and it can shout / But it cannot tell you/ what your life’s about

I wrote this tune about one of the most beautiful places that I have ever seen.

When living in Massie, Ontario I would frequently cycle or hike through the beautiful hills of Strathavon (a.k.a. Strathaven), overlooking the Bighead River Valley.

The song is based on historical records and local folklore, and tells the tale of a young woman's demise after plummeting from a cliff in the area.

I recorded the song on my 2017 album "Wondrous Beauty". Words and Music © 2015 Ken Dunn (SOCAN, ASCAP).

LYRICS

Chorus:

I am home among the cedars / those arbor vitae greener / than the hills of Strathavon
Where my love and I did wander / like rolling rivers under / that full moon rising high

Verse:

And her kisses they grew sweeter / our love, it knew no fear /when the song of spring arrived
But this world it could not keep her / she fell, then fell deeper /down that mountain side

Chorus

And I knew I could not save her / for the ice was on the river/ and the snow banks / way too high
But when I get to dying / you know I will be smiling /for to see my true lover’s eyes

Chorus

Well, it was a stormy October day, and the Canada Geese were heading south. Seemed like the perfect time to add this instrumental tune to my archive series. NEW VIDEO: THE GREAT UNKNOWN (Live @ Home)

Continuing along with my archive series, here is the title tune from my 2016 album "The Great Unknown". This song, subtitled "Ballad of the Unknown Folk Singer", was inspired by some of my lonelier times on the road -those times when I would take the stage only to find one or two souls in the audience, or a last minute cancellation after travelling for hours through a snow storm... well, you get the picture. But, as Garnet Rogers told me once, "never complain about being able to do what you love". And so, this song is really a celebration and is indeed filled with immense gratitude. Don't forget to subscribe to my channel, comment, like, unlike, etc. In addition, you can send me a tip at https://kendunnmusic.com/tip-jars/4017 to feed my soul. Love, peace, and happy listening! NEW VIDEO: STAY BY MY SIDE

Continuing my archive series on YouTube, here is another tune for your enjoyment. This one was originally recorded on my 2016 album "The Great Unknown". Ostensibly about homelessness, it is more generally about the need for us all to stay by each other's side, especially in times of darkness.

For those who might like to follow along, here are the lyrics:

STAY BY MY SIDE Words and music by Ken Dunn © 2016

An old man in the dawn, just a running from the wild dogs

In the mist of Marrakesh, you thank your Djellaba for your flesh

CHORUS: Stay by my side, won’t you stay by my side ? (x4)

An old woman all alone, with a shopping cart - her own

She’s the mother of the street, not someone that you wanna meet

CHORUS

Put a twenty in the ladies jar, slipped away into my car

Texting on my new iPhone, hashtag honey I’m a coming home

CHORUS

Passing by that electric gate, where my cottage awaits

It’s just another day, before the people have their say

NEW VIDEO: COME BACK JONI!

It's been a while since I posted a new video, so here's hoping you enjoy this one! I finally got some semblance of a studio set up in our new home near Owen Sound, Ontario. Pretty basic, but great for doing 'live' recordings.

I wrote "Come Back Joni" in honour of Joni Mitchell, as well as the ancestral peoples of British Columbia's Sunshine Coast. It was written in B.C. during a particularly bad fire season, not far from Joni's long time Canadian home near Half Moon Bay. Her spirit is embedded in the land and peoples of this region.

"Come Back Joni" is available on my last album "Ashes in the Morning" and features Mark Mariash on drums and percussion, Randy Martin on bass, Anna Green on harmony and backing vocals, Ben Grossman on hurdy gurdy, and Tyler Beckett on fiddle.

Stay safe and be kind everyone!

My intention in creating this new video archive series is to catalogue the songs that I have written over the past several decades in live, intimate, solo performances. I hope you find some worthwhile connection in these creations. Love and peace to you all!

First up is the first song on my most recent album "Ashes in the Morning"... It's called "King High Tide"...

NOTES FROM THE GARDEN

I hope this finds you all, my dear friends and fans, safe and sound as we continue to navigate these difficult waters together. Anna, Louie, and I have moved back to Ontario and settled into homesteading, missing our life in B.C. but grateful for the opportunity to be closer to our families, and enjoying the comfort of our home province.

Given the cancellation of all touring, and the decided lack of work in general, I am spending my days with loved ones and re-acquainting myself with the art of organic gardening. Growing our own food has been a meditative experience, nurturing not only body, but soul as well.

I am forever grateful for the wonderful reception that Ashes in the Morning has received since its debut in May. To everyone who has purchased a copy, tuned in via streaming or radio, to the DJs who have kept me in their playlists and on the charts, and to the reviewers who have introduced me to their audiences - Thank You !!

Respite from the road has inspired a flow of musical creation and a renewed appreciation for the impact that this gift called music has had on my life. I am also embracing this opportunity to learn about, and nurture community via the online world more. As a result, I've been working on a new video series which I will share with you in the coming months.

Once again, thank you for your continued support. It is appreciated more than you might imagine. Best wishes for your continued health, safety, and happiness. Redemption is just beyond the hairpin turn ahead.

As we struggle to find meaning in these difficult times, let us keep our hearts open, and our hopes alive. Despite the suffering and loss, I believe we now have an opportunity to forge a positive new beginning.

Perhaps the dawning of a new age, a kinder, gentler, and more compassionate relationship with our selves, our fellow human beings, our fellow creatures, and Mother Earth is at hand.

Like my fellow musicians, the gig cancellations continue to roll in, and I find myself struggling for ways to remain connected to you - my dear friends and fans.

Thankfully, the veritable explosion of online performances is testimony to our ability as performers and audiences alike to thrive as a musical community.

Sadly, venues that present live music have few options, with an already dwindling number of folk and roots presenters facing further pressure and risk of closing.

I hope to help by performing an online concert for each cancelled show, with proceeds of ticket sales shared with each venue that had to cancel.

I am still working out the logistical details, but hope to have those worked out soon. Thank you for your kind attention and continued support. Stay safe and stay kind.

Love, Peace, and Music Always, Ken

As we enter a new decade, push the proverbial reset button, and formulate our resolutions, I remain hopeful that a better world is unfolding!

Undoubtedly, 2019 was a year filled with angst and crises too numerous to fully comprehend. And, despite our fervent desire for a quick fix, we know the clock striking twelve midnight is not going to make it all go away.

Whatever Bogeyman haunts your particular version of reality, whether that be the climate crisis, the prospect of nuclear war, or your own personal struggles with mortality, let us all take comfort in the fact that we are stronger together as a community. Indeed, resolving our differences as a species, and learning to treat all life on this planet with respect is our only hope, if are to survive.

Musically, it has been a wild roller coaster of a year with the release of my 8th album, "Live in L.A." and tours both far and wide. Taking a very personal, musical message of love, peace, social justice, and environmental responsibility across the continent can be a risky business on many fronts. Vulnerability and isolation alternate with exhilaration and the formation of powerful connections. Acceptance and rejection become yin and yang, a catalyst for letting go and cultivating gratitude.

And so with a new year, and hopefully a new age dawning, this old folksinger will continue down the road, sometimes crawling, sometimes dancing, either solo or happily accompanied by my love and musical partner Anna, and our furry little friend, Louie.

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported me on this quest, including family, friends, fans, DJ's, and venues. It really does take a village! Special thanks to 'my team' - Michelle Fortier, Larry Ahearn and Trespass Music. I look forward to our continuing journey together. A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT CHRISTMAS STORY

Not your usual Christmas story, but my heart goes out to all who are suffering this season...

I am back in Hamilton, Ontario for Christmas, and reminded of the role that this city played in the eradication of "The Great White Plague" of Tuberculosis. The Cross of Lorraine, although saddled with a long, and at times controversial history has been the symbol of the Canadian and American Lung Associations and their Christmas Seal Campaigns to fund research into prevention and treatment of TB for over a century.

Although largely under control in this country, TB still kills a million people around the globe. The Canadian (and American) Lung Associations continue to fund research into lung disease, and the Christmas Seal Campaign continues today.

I wrote "Cross of Lorraine" to honour the patients and staff of Chedoke Continuing Care Centre, where I worked as a psychologist for over a decade. #FARWESTCONNECTS

Just back from my first FAR-West (Folk Alliance International's Western Region) Conference in Los Angeles. Their catchphrase is #farwestconnects, and the weekend certainly lived up to that. From the get go, I was made to feel welcome, and included in this wonderful musical community. Being awarded five late night showcases meant performing until the wee hours of the morning. Thankfully, I had no trouble sleeping 'til noon!

The opportunity to perform before audiences comprised of booking agents, venues, media, etc. was definitely a big part of the conference. However, FAR-West was much more than that to me. I was quite simply blown away by the incredible musical talent being presented. One of the highlights was a chance to meet and hear one of my early folk music inspirations, Eric Andersen! At 75, he is as inspiring, relevant, and soulful as ever.

But, in the end, it was the relationships that I began building with fellow members of this folk community that I will treasure for years to come. #farwestconnects indeed!

This past fall, at the Folk Music Ontario Conference in Toronto, I had the pleasure of sitting down with renowned folk DJ Jan Vanderhorst. Jan is of course host of the wonderful "Just Us Folk" program on CKPC 1380 in Brantford, Ontario.

Jan quickly got to the heart of the matter, with topics ranging from the relevance of folk music in the quest for social justice, the motivation behind my latest CD, "Wondrous Beauty", and the role that my career in psychology played in my songwriting.

And, he managed to spin a couple of tunes from the album as well- "Wondrous Beauty" and "Hold On"... Enjoy !!

WE LOVE YOU... ONTARIO!

We are so thrilled to be back in Ontario, free from the uncertainty that surrounded our travel plans! DESIREE DAWSON COMING TO THE SUNSHINE COAST

I first met Desiree when Anna and I performed in concert with her at the Sunshine Music Festival in Powell River, BC last fall. Blessed with a voice as pure and powerful as it is infused with sensitivity and soul, Desiree accompanies herself beautifully on baritone ukelele. Her songwriting exhibits a maturity and sophistication that belies her youthful demeanour. It is therefore easy to see why she was selected as CBC Searchlight's 2016 Winner over 2,000 contestants across Canada.

We are pleased to welcome Desiree for her very first performance on the lower Sunshine Coast, and the relaxed and comfortable Gumboot Cafe in Roberts Creek could not be a more fitting venue. As a special bonus, Desiree will be joined by another great young singer-songwriter Jody Okabe, also from Vancouver.

Anna and I will start off this special evening with a set of my original, folk-inspired songs. Of course, the fabulous cuisine and libations which the Gumboot Cafe is known for will be available for purchase.

Advance tickets can be purchased for $15 (plus service charge) ONLINE HERE, or for $20 at the door.

British Columbia singer-songwriter Ken Dunn released his seventh album “Wondrous Beauty” earlier this year. Ken joined us in the studio with partner Anna Green for an in-depth discussion about his music and the new album. We’re pleased to bring a portion of that interview to Episode 344 of Folk Roots Radio alongside a look at some of the best of the latest new releases.

Singer-songwriter Ken Dunn’s 2015 album “The Great Unknown” was one of my favourite albums of the year. An exquisite slice of beautifully played thoughtful folk with Ken Dunn’s lovely languid singing voice, it was an absolute pleasure to listen to it. His wonderful new album “Wondrous Beauty,” (his seventh,) is the start of a whole new relationship with his music. 10 new well-crafted Ken Dunn songs – with some really nice harmonies from partner and keyboard player Anna Green, some great fiddle from Tyler Beckett, and a lovely understated production from Ken himself. Ken joined us in the studio with partner Anna Green to chat about the new album.

RICHIE HAVENS WOODSTOCK GUITAR

So, I thought I'd try something different with the blog. Welcome to "Reflections on the Road", a series of stories looking back on my musical journey thus far. No particular chronological order, just stories that come to mind. Hope you enjoy them!

Episode 1: RICHIE HAVENS WOODSTOCK GUITAR

I first discovered Belize in the mid 90's, and what started as a week's holiday soon developed into a yearly musical sojourn. When I arrived on the island of Ambergris Caye, I was surprised to find a thriving folk and blues music scene populated by the many North American and European "expats" living on the island. I quickly got to know some of the local performers and was able to borrow a guitar from a Canadian woman who happened to be playing an afternoon set at the Holiday Hotel, a small, pink three story wooden structure on the beach in San Pedro Town. I don't remember her name, but I am very thankful to her for helping me secure a gig at the hotel. Thus began my yearly musical journey in this exotic tropical country. One which would involve everything from opening for Jerry Jeff Walker of "Mr. Bojangles" fame, to cancelling a tour after breaking three fingers. But alas, those stories are for another day. This one involves Richie Havens... or at least his guitar. And a famous one at that!

Our story begins at the previously mentioned Holiday Hotel, with an invitation to perform at a remote jungle lodge by a rather eccentric and somewhat drunken man by the name of John Luce. "Perform for our dinner guests", he said, "and I will give you a great discount on a room at my lodge, and dinner will be on me... Oh ya, and no need to bring your guitar, because I have a very special one that you can play!" Despite my prodding, "special" was all I could get in securing a description of the mysterious stringed instrument in question. Well, how could I refuse. I had wanted to check out all that Belize had to offer, and after the heat and humidity of the keys, the thought of lush rainforest in the rugged Maya Mountains bordering Guatemala was extremely appealing!

It was an easy Island Ferry from San Pedro back to Belize City, and a two hour bus ride to San Ignacio, gateway to the Cayo District and the beautiful Maya Mountains. Then the real adventure began. Climbing aboard a Range Rover, I was transported up precarious, pot holed "roads" to the location of my next gig, Black Rock Jungle Lodge, located in a breathtakingly beautiful location overlooking the Macal River. The sounds of Scarlett Macaws and Howler Monkeys greeted my arrival, and it truly felt like I had arrived in heaven on earth! There was not much time for sightseeing though. It was almost dinner time, and the 20 or so guests seated at the longish tables appeared eager for entertainment. John quickly ushered me into his back office and proudly pulled out a somewhat mouldy, beat up guitar case, held together by copious amounts of duct tape. My heart dropped. Was this is the special guitar? I hoped it could be tuned. I hoped it had strings! As he opened the case, an equally sad Guild D40 emerged, complete with a fair chunk of the sound board missing between the sound hole and bridge. Once it was in my hands, I breathed a sigh of relief. The action was crazy high, but hey, it was playable, and almost in tune! "So you know who this guitar belonged to?", asked John as he handed me a photo and some official looking paperwork. The unmistakable visage of Richie Havens appeared in the photo, and the "Certificate of Authenticity" said something like, "I certify that this is the guitar I played at Woodstock...etc. etc.", signed "Richie Havens". Seriously? I was skeptical to say the least. It seemed just a tad unlikely that such an iconic instrument would be found in a remote Central American jungle. "I kid you not", he said, "now get out there and do it justice". And so I did, or at least I tried! Maybe it was just my imagination, but I swear I could hear "Motherless Child" emanating from the sound box as I began playing. The rusty, somewhat dirt encrusted strings thudded against the neck, as I struggled with the action. But, in the end, it was a fabulous show, the faces of the audience glowing in the candlelight, the welcome coolness of the night, the jungle providing an amazing symphonic accompaniment. I suppose I'll never know for sure if it really was Richie Haven's Woodstock guitar. But, you will have to agree, it makes a great story to tell the grandchildren!

Richie Havens was a prolific and beloved American singer-songwriter. Born in 1941, he died in 2013. Richie was the opening act at the original Woodstock Music Festival in 1969 and had a long and diverse musical career, including a collaboration with the electronic band Groove Armada in his later years. He established a program called the Natural Guard in 1990 focusing on inner city improvement projects for children. Havens started chapters across not only the U.S. but also in Belize, where he was known to perform. He played a Guild D40 at Woodstock, subsequently adding an upper pick guard to the instrument. He is known to have played newer Guild D40's in later years. The Richie Havens Signature Dreadnought was issued by Guild Guitars to honour his career.

John Luce was the manager of Black Rock Jungle Lodge in Cayo District, Belize up until his tragic murder in 2001 in the very office where he first showed me that "special" guitar. Yikes!

Many thanks to Tom Arvidsson from Thirsty Boots in Stockholm for the great review of Wondrous Beauty... calling it "Strong Canadiana with Vision"! If you love roots music and haven't already checked out Tom's blog, it is a wonderful resource. FOCUS ON FOLKAL POINT

Since 1974, Colin MacDonald has hosted one of the U.K.'s quintessential folk music programs. Thank you Colin for keeping the spirit of folk music alive all these years. And thank you for your continuing support of my music.

FOLKAL POINT – musical alternatives sans frontieres from folk to rock with myriad cute other stuff slipped in along the way – offers innovative artistry to discerning listeners around the world. This innovative radio programme’s stripped-down format, quixotic, informed, an unbiased spotlight on originality and creativity, steadfastly spurns here-today-gone-tomorrow fads, and just as resolutely ignores trivia. More than four decades since first airing on nascent Radio Clyde, this well-regarded, now widely syndicated two-hour weekly programme is still curated and presented globally by its self-effacing Scottish creator *. Always thoughtful, often quirky, sometimes provocative, enigmatic even, yet always fiercely resistant to barriers and contrived labels, Folkal Point remains laid back, arguably a tad eccentric but above all still a joyously maverick celebration for all on this fragile blue planet who value the glorious confluence of meaningful words and music in their lives.

* Colin MacDonald’s media career, at home in Scotland, London and abroad (from both ends of the Mediterranean to the South Atlantic), has also embraced extensive journalism plus TV and film work – both on and off camera. Now, some seven decades along the road least travelled, he’s “most at ease with a microphone and plenty of great music to share”.

Tried-and-tested since 1974, the Folkal Point format – still essentially folk to rock – is quixotic, informed, unbiased and treats music, musicians and listeners seriously. Veteran Scots producer-presenter Colin MacDonald brings a lifetime’s media experience at home and abroad to bear.”It’s not what I say but what I play that matters, so you should really listen carefully to the words”, he urges.

FOLKAL POINT is broadcast simultaneously (Thursdays, 10.00pm – midnight) on 105.2 FM in the Uists and Benbecula via An Reidio, across the Cowal Peninsula via Dunoon Community Radio – 97.4 FM and online, and Two Lochs Radio (Wester Ross) on 106 FM, 106.6 FM and online.

Folkal Point then timeshifts on Crystal FM 107.4 from Penicuik, serving south west Midlothian (Thursdays,11.00pm -1.00am) plus a 10.00am – midday Friday repeat, with a Friday midnight slot on DAB digital and online broadcaster Radio Telstar throughout Glasgow and surrounding areas, plus Saturdays (10.00pm-midnight) with HBS in Glasgow and Paisley. DCR offers a Sunday evening repeat from 8-10pm. The programme is also re-transmitted (globally!) online three times a week by Blues and Roots Radio from Canada.

Folkal Point is curated by Colin MacDonald in Scotland and realised at the Glasgow studios of HBS.

THE DEJA VU MINI TOUR

We are back home on B.C.'s Sunshine Coast after a whirlwind mini tour which stretched from Florida, through Texas, to California. Aptly dubbed "Deja Vu", we returned to a number of venues we had played at several times before. From dodging tornados in Dallas and flooding and landslides in California to lost guitars and laptops, the tour was not without drama. In the end, however, all is well, and it was wonderful to connect with friends, fans, and family. Thanks to a very generous audience in Estero, Florida, our 3rd annual house concert to benefit the Harry Chapin Food Bank raised enough funds to distribute over $17,000 worth of food to those in need in Southwest Florida. Thanks to food bank CEO, Keith Scoggins, and his partner Diane Sovern for generously hosting us once again. Returning to Avila Beach, California was also very special, with a lovely acoustic show at Morovino Winery's tasting room. Thanks to David and Andrea Bradford for their generosity in hosting us in our former home town. A final highlight... fist bumping David Suzuki on his flight home from the Sundance Film Festival !!

KEN DUNN & ANNA GREEN RETURN TO ROBERTS CREEK, B.C.

We are thrilled to announce our return engagement at this amazing venue on April 16, 2016. We first played the Gumboot Cafe back in December 2015, and what a wonderful experience it was! We have since learned that Roberts Creek, B.C. is known for its supportive, listening audiences, a rarity in this day and age. Owner Joe DeLeo, himself an amazing musician, and his staff ensure an inspiring time for audience and performers alike. To top it off, the food and beverages are excellent. If you happen to find yourself on "The Coast" on April 16, please consider joining us for an evening of soulful, folk-inspired original acoustic music.

FOCUS ON GLASGOW'S HOSPITAL BROADCASTING SERVICE
I am sure that most musicians would agree that, after working for months (sometimes years) writing, recording, and promoting an album, it is very gratifying to receive radio airplay.

Since the release of 'The Great Unknown' late last year, I have been thrilled by the positive response from folk and roots radio programs not only in Canada and the U.S., but across the globe.

One particular network of stations currently playing my album is especially near and dear to my heart. The Hospital Broadcasting Service (HBS) is an award winning totally voluntary organization that has been providing patients in Glasgow and Paisley, Scotland with their own dedicated radio channel since Christmas Day 1970.

In addition to broadcasting to the bedside equipment in most wards, patients can also listen-in and hear the programmes in stereo via a Listen Live option. It is very gratifying to know that my songs are being broadcast to hospital patients. Working in hospitals for almost 20 years had a profound impact on my personal development, and by default on my songwriting. Indeed "Cross of Lorraine' was written about the fight against 'the great white plague' of tuberculosis, and the cross that came to be the symbol for the worldwide Christmas Seal campaign.

Thanks to Colin Fielding and his show Folkal Point which airs not only on HBS, but on Blues and Roots Radio in Canada as well. GRACIAS SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE !!

Thursday, February 11, 2016 was a very special night for Anna and I. After a lovely introduction by Jaci Winters (Amistad Canada), we took to the stage of the Santa Ana Theatre at La Biblioteca Publica in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico for a sold out concert in this beautiful 100 seat historic theatre.

We performed an entirely original 90 minute set, including several songs from the new album with myself on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, and Anna on keyboard and harmony vocals.

Thanks to our generous audience, we were able to raise almost $1,500 which will fund Biblioteca Scholarships so that deserving Mexican youth can further their education.

Thanks to James Langham (Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables) for the excellent sound and lighting, and to Bernard Czelakowski and crew from San Miguel de Allende for cinematography.

THANK YOU COCONUT POINT

On Wednesday, January 13, around 50 generous souls from the Residences at Coconut Point in Estero, Florida gathered to join us in a celebration of music and community to raise funds for the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida. As mentioned in my last blog entry, Harry Chapin was not only a prolific songwriter and performer, but an ardent advocate of hunger relief programs not only across the U.S., but worldwide.

With Anna on keyboards (thanks to a loaner from local musician Ron Balogh) and I on acoustic guitar, we performed a two hour benefit concert which raised enough funds to distribute over $7000 worth of food to the needy in Southwest Florida. Our friend, fellow musician and food bank Chairperson, Keith Scoggins started the evening with a talk about the food bank, and an inspiring opening set. Keith also joined us for a rousing sing-along rendition of Neil Young's Helpless at evening's end. Special thanks go out to Keith's hard working partner Diane Sovern for organizing the event, to Leigh Piscitelli for her excellent photos and video, as well as one of our favourite performers, Ft. Myers, Florida-based Americana musician Roy Schneider for the generous offer of his sound system.

Although poverty may not be the first word that comes to mind in association with Florida, the sad reality is that just beyond the monied tourist areas and gated communities, there are many working poor families in need. In this regard, it is worth noting that over 50% of the food distributed by the food bank sustains children and seniors, with the balance to those with disabilities, the working poor, and homeless.

In summary, the evening was a testament to the generosity of the residents of Coconut Point in Estero, Florida and their ongoing commitment to sharing the blessings so many of us enjoy. This was our third opportunity to perform for them, and we look forward to doing it again next year.

HARRY CHAPIN FOOD BANK BENEFIT CONCERT

As the holidays fade into memory, both the snow, and the temperature are falling here in Ontario. Anna and I are busy with rehearsals for our benefit concert for the Harry Chapin Food Bank in Southwest Florida on January 13. I must confess that I am looking forward to the warmer temperatures, and reuniting with our good friends at Coconut Point in Estero, including Food Bank Chairman, Keith Scoggins, who, being a fine musician in his own right, will be opening for us.

For you younger folks, Harry Chapin was a cinematographer, playwright, poet, songwriter and ardent advocate, fighting against what he saw as injustices in our society. He was best known as a prolific songwriter, recording artist and performer who played more than 300 concerts a year. He was the author of such enduring classics as Taxi, Circle, and Cats in the Cradle.

Over the years, Harry demonstrated an amazing personal commitment, giving the proceeds of every other concert to organizations fighting hunger. Hunger became Harry’s cause and passion, discussing ending hunger at all appearances, lobbying Washington constantly for help, and aiding in the establishment of the World Hunger Commission. He was the founder of World Hunger Year (WHY), an international organization that brings grassroots organizations together to fight hunger.

He also established the hunger hotline in New York City (a service that remains open for all hungry people in the city) and the Long Island Cares Food Bank, where his widow, Sandy, still serves on the board of directors.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
What an amazing musical year it has been! 2015 started with a tour down California's central coast and recording the first tracks for the new album. February brought a return to our beloved Costa Rica and a number of shows in the Guanacaste region. Returning to Canada in the spring, I focused my attention on completion of the new album, as well as a number of Ontario shows. With the release of "The Great Unknown" in September came radio airplay on folk and roots programs across the globe, as well as tours of Alberta, B.C., and Ontario... not to mention my 64th birthday!!

And now, sitting by the proverbial fire in our home town and writing a batch of new songs, it is time to reflect and give thanks to all our friends, fans, fellow musicians, promotors, media, and everyone who supported us over this past year !! Many blessings to all of you. May there be peace in your world, and across the entire globe !!
